Don’t you feel the need for texture as soon as Fall kicks in and T-Shirts are folded back into cupboards? I’ve recently travelled back to France, staying at my parents’ home for two weeks, and I thought that this relaxing vacation time would be a good opportunity to get my hands on polymer clay.
Tokyu Hands is selling so many types of clay it’s overwhelming, for a first timer in particular, so I just grabbed one pack, zou, almost randomly.
Artista Formo Natural Stone Modeling Clay is an air-dry clay so once the pack is open you need to work with small amounts at a time and protect the rest of the block by wrapping it tightly with cling film and storing it in a tupperware box.
floral foam and wire, there is nothing you can’t find in dad’s attic…
I am quite happy with my choice, though. Artista Formo clay is easy to work with, doesn’t shrink while drying and doesn’t seem to crack either. I threw a few beads on the floor with intended violence, kaboum (like that), and they didn’t break. Very cool.
My plan was to make Francesca’s stunning faux ceramic glazed beads. She has a special technique for glazing clay beads where she mixes acrylic paint with varnish, lets the two parts separate, and then roughly paints the beads for a beautiful effect. I have tried her technique and it works, but my beads were too small to really have the wow factor she achieves. Or maybe the beige paint I chose was a little too bland. In any case, I started to really like what the naked beads look like and decided to have fun with that.
Some of them are half-varnished half-coarse, a few of the cubic ones have patches of french text on them (am I missing my art book making days?) and the rest of the batch were shaped by blending in bits of cloth fibers and various other miscellaneous dirt lying about on the table. Those are my favourite ones and I already know that they have an exquisite affinity for gold, silver and brass.
I ended up with a nice little bundle of beads to bring back with me to Japan, all of them unique, so I am very much looking forward to the matching game and can’t wait to make new Bijou Caillou products! Stay tuned!
À bientôt mes chouchous!
